What is the Coffee Region

The Eje Cafetero covers the departments of Caldas, Quindio and Risaralda, between 1,200 and 2,000 meters elevation in the Andes. UNESCO declared it a Cultural Landscape in 2011. The region produces some of the best arabica coffee in the world and is home to fincas, colonial towns, cloud forest and the Cocora Valley wax palms.

Where to stay

  • Salento: the classic base, cobblestone streets, 40 restaurants, very busy weekends
  • Filandia: quieter, better food, amazing mirador, 30 min from Salento
  • Pijao: slow-food movement town, very local feel, fewer tourists
  • Manizales: larger city, access to Los Nevados national park
  • Stay at a finca: sleep on a working coffee farm, best for coffee geeks

Frequently asked questions

Three to four days is ideal. One day for Salento and the Cocora Valley hike, one for a finca coffee tour, one for Filandia and its mirador, and optionally one for a day trip to Termales de Santa Rosa hot springs.

Salento is bigger and busier with more restaurants and tours. Filandia is quieter with better food and a stunning 360 degree mirador. Most travelers stay in Salento but visit Filandia for a half day. If you want less crowds, base in Filandia.

Fly to Armenia (AXM) or Pereira (PEI), 1 hour and 60 to 120 USD. Avianca, Latam and Viva fly this route several times daily. You can also take a 7 to 8 hour bus for 60,000 to 100,000 COP.

Walk the fields, pick your own coffee cherries, watch the processing (washing, drying, roasting) and end with a cupping where you taste different roast profiles. Best fincas: Don Elias, Las Acacias, El Ocaso, La Morelia.
